On The Go Magazine

On the TTC they offer so many free magazines.  I never really take any of them, until today! I grabbed a few of them, and while flipping through them I found COUPONS!  What a great find! On the Go magazine can be found at TTC and Go Stations around Toronto, but I am not too sure where else in Canada. If anybody knows please feel free to share! So here are the coupons that I found:

Why do people get mad when someone is using coupons?

This is one thing that I do not understand at all. Why do people get angry when other people use coupons at the checkout? Seriously who goes to Walmart on a Saturday mid-day when they are in a rush? and if my choice to use coupons angers you,  I can only assume that you have bigger issues in your life then my choice to save money!

Over the last few months I have becoming much more savvy when using my coupons, I know what is on sale and I know how to maximize my savings with the sales by using the appropriate coupons. So yes, I do use many coupons when I check out, but I am very organized. If I have a printable coupon I take the time to double check with Customer Service that I can use the coupon.   I always tell the cashier that I have coupons, I hand her them right after she rings in the item and I am patient when she takes her time to make sure that it is valid.   I do everything in my power to make checkout time  quick! Over the last two days I have come across some very RUDE people whispering under their breath that "they do not have time for this" or "seriously?" 

I am sure that I am not the only person to have encountered impatient people, so I want to share some of the great (well I think great) ways of calling them out on their behaviour.

1. I have turned to one lady and nicely said, "I am sorry money doesn't come easy to me, however if you would like me not to use my coupons and make this process go quickly, I have no problem with you  paying me directly the $20.00 (or whatever my total savings is about to be) I am about to save!" with a great big smile!
2. I turn and acknowledge that they are angry and say "I only wish I could just pay the extra $20.00 (or whatever my total savings is about to be) but I hate to give someone more money then I have to.
3. I turn and say, "I am sorry, do you have an issue with me saving money?"
4. I announce very loud my total savings with a great big smile on my face!
5. I just turn around and smile really big and say "sorry! coupons!"
6. When they say "seriously?" I have said "YUP! COUPONS!"

I think these people are getting mad at the wrong person, I am doing everything correctly, but the cashiers are not properly trained on their store coupon policy and they take a lot of time looking over every single inch of my coupon, and if they are not sure they call over their manager to double check with them. 

I really don't care what a stranger thinks or says, I know how to handle my own. I want everyone using coupons to feel the same way, cause at the end of the day it's YOUR money and no one can make you spend more then you need to!

My deals this weekend! Can you say FREE!!

I am thinking that more and more people are using coupons these days! I went out to do my shopping this weekend and noticed that a lot of the items that were on sale and had coupons that one could increase their savings were gone! Example the Walmart that I went to was all out of the $1.48 Ziploc Evolve Sandwich Bags - so I am hoping they get more in before the sale is done (FYI when you use the right@home coupon B2 get $4 off would make them free).   But I did end up getting some great deals

At the check out, the cashier told me that she had a lot of people using coupons this weekend! I think that is great, its all about saving where you can. Keep using those coupons, they are just like cash, would you throw out a $20 bill?

Where to find coupons in Canada

You might think that there are not that many coupons available in Canada. I thought the same thing when I was first looking into using coupons. I can say I was WRONG!  There are so many places that offer coupons. Here is a great list to look at.

At the grocery store: Many grocery stores carry coupons. You can always find pads of them near the products that are being promoted. I have realized that not all stores have coupons, but you can use coupons at most major grocery stores. For example, Freshco, Shopper Drug Mart, Dominion all carry coupons in on their shelves, where it’s sometimes really hard to find them in is Walmart, but you can always use your coupons at Walmart.   You may be tempted to take as many as you can, but be kind and not greedy, take enough for your own personal use you will require until the expiry. Also look at the checkout to  find calendars and booklets that contain coupons (Toonies for Tummies is a great example of a coupon booklet that costs only $2.00 and is full of savings that you can use at most stores).

Newspaper flyers: There are two nationally distributed coupon flyers – Red Plum and Smart Source  they are distributed about once a month.  Here is their schedule for the rest of the year:

In Magazines: There are usually some great coupons that you can find in Canadian magazines and sometimes you will find Clip ‘n Save booklets inserted in them.  Canadian Living and Chatelaine by far have the best coupons.

Online printable: some companies offer promotions where you can immediately print a coupon right from your own printer, cut it out and take it to your local stores. Check out Living Well, they always have great printable coupons. My favourite site is SmartCanucks they always have great links to great deals!


Corporate websites: Take a look at the products you like and see if they have a website. Many times these websites have great offers for their consumers. 

Facebook:  With Facebook becoming a huge marketing tool for many companies, there are plenty of coupons to be found within this social network. To get a coupon its easy, just simply "LIKE" the product page and there are usually some great offers.  Make sure you scan the pages updates, because they usually have some great savings offers!

Order them online: There are sites that you can order your coupons on, these sites are usually pretty strict with their ordering, for example on order per household and there is a waiting period to re-order some of your favourite coupons:

On or in product packaging: There are some great coupons to be found inside of packaging. A friend of mine started saving coupons she found on milk bags, as a mother of 4 she went through a lot of milk! The coupon was for Tide Buy 2 get $5.00 off. She saved these coupons and found a great sale on Tide for $4.44 she had 10 coupons and she ended up getting 20 bottles of Tide for the price of less then ten! So before you recycle your packaging, remember to take a quick look and see if there are any coupons inside!

Mailing lists: Join the mailing lists of the companies that you often buy products from. You can always send the company an email and ask to join their mailing list, and when filling out forms I always check YES to be included in other promotions. You never know what you could get in your mail one day!

Writing to companies: Share your thoughts and ideas with the companies that you really like and buy their products, being positive can at times be rewarding, and they may just send you a few coupons to say THANK YOU! 

Doctors or Dentists office: Yup believe it or not there are coupons available at your Doctors and Dentist office! (not just in the magazines in the waiting room).  These coupons are usually specific to the doctors specialty. For example Crest coupons and the Dentists office.  Many Doctors offices have parenting magazines and you may be surprised the coupons you would find inside!

Coupon trading: About once every two weeks I bring in my coupons to work and share with the other ladies.  Recently during one of these “giveaway” days I found out that another one of my colleagues was a coupon enthusiast and we ended up sharing and trading coupons!

Coupon trains: I have never done this before, but I am really considering joining one. Here is how it works; one person creates a large envelope of coupons and then asks for a group of people to circulate the coupons amongst themselves. The envelope goes from person to person often across the country they take what they need and give other coupons in return and send it off to the next person. It is a great way to stockpile a variety of coupons quickly.

$30 Presidents Choice Gift Card!

This is a great Mail In Rebate (MIR) - remember the acronyms from me previous post?

So here is how this works,  if you spend $20 on any participating PepsiCo products at select Loblaws stores and receive $30.00 in President Choice Gift Cards. So what that means you get $10 to shop at their store. 

Make sure that you find the form that you have to fill out (I found it on a Doritos display, but if you can't find it, just ask a cashier).  Once you get home, fill out the form send a it along with your receipt to the address listed. In six-eight weeks you should receive your $30 gift card in the mail!

This promotion starts April 28, 2011 and ends May 19, 2011.

DISCOUNTS FOR CAREGIVERS OF SPECIAL NEEDS INDIVIDUALS

I came across this post today and realized that there are so many people in the world selflessly caring for loved ones with disabilities. I am sure it get expensive. I found this great post on Smartcanucks, by one of the members Koolaid. She took the time to list all the discounts for caregivers of the disabled.

The Access 2 Entertainment Card:

This card allows you free entrance for the caregiver of a person with special needs to a number of different cultural venues across Canada. 

The application is available here Access 2 entertainment card. The card is accepted across Canada, however it needs to be renewed every 5 years.

Canada's Wonderland: reduced rate for disability and once in gate, you have to check in at Service desk to gain access pass for person with disability. This means you have reduced wait times to most rides and enter at EXIT doors onto the rides when staff permit you to

Via Rail: offers reduced travel rates


Geneva Centre for Autism (Toronto): free viewings of current movies

Kerry's Place: Sign up for emails or register directly through your local office. Not only do they provide support they have events at reduced prices

Ontario Provincial Parks: If you have a CNIB card or wheelchair parking pass, you can get reduced fee's at Ontario's prov parks for camping

Bowmanville Zoo: free caregiver admittance with the purchase of admission for a person of special needs

WHAT DO THE ACRONYMS MEAN?

The couponing world has a lot of acronyms, here is a great list of what they mean.

BOGO or B1G1 = Buy One, Get One Free
B2G1 = Buy Two, Get One Free
B3G1 = Buy Three, Get One Free
FREE ITEM COUPON/FPC = A coupon that allows you to get the product completely free.
HV = High Value
IP = Internet Printable Coupon
LF = Looking For
MIR = Mail In Rebate
NED = No Expiry Date
Peelie = A coupon that is attached directly to the product to be “peeled off“
PM = Price Matched (when the store you are at matches the sale price at another store)
PP = Purchase Price
RC = Raincheck
SMP = Specially Marked Packages
STACKING = Some stores allow the use of more than one coupon per item, if the coupon itself does not restrict it.
SASE = Self Addressed Stamped Envelope
Tear-pad = A pad of coupons, usually on the shelf or display, where you tear the coupon off of the pad.
TFT = Toonies for Tummies
TMF = Try Me Free
WYB/WUB = When You Buy

COUPON WEBSITES

Coupons are a great way to save money, and when you combine coupons with sales at the grocery store,  money that stays in your wallet begins to add up.  I am sure that many of you have seen or heard about the show on TLC  Extreme Couponing?  I just want to make one thing clear, this is not really possible in Canada, you cannot "STACK" coupons (using more then one coupon for the same product) at most Canadian groceries stores, it's one coupon per purchase/product. However I have heard that some London Drug stores allow coupon stacking, but it's pretty much hit and miss. I will update if I have heard anything new on this.

Before you begin your coupon collecting adventure, here are a few things that you might want to consider; set up a new email address - GMAIL or YAHOO or HOTMAIL.  The reason being is that you may start signing up for different offers and I find it much easier if my saving all are filtered into one separate email address.   To get many of these coupons you will need to register on the websites and order your coupons directly to be mailed to your home. WELCOME TO MY BLOG

Hi and welcome to my first blog about savings! I am so excited to be doing this. I was inspired by my sister, to actually blog about all the savings that are out there.  I believe that everyone likes a deal, and when I  get a great deal, all I want to do is YELL it out loud.

I think this need to tell the world about how much I saved, comes from my mom. She is the QUEEN of finding a deal.  After one of her shopping trips, she would hold up an item and say "how much do you think I paid for this?"  I would never even bother to answer because I would rarely get it right.

The truth is, we all work hard for our money, and if there is a way of saving some of it, I say go for it! 

I want to share with you all the things that you can get for less and maybe take that money that you have saved on groceries, and spend it on other things that make you happy.
