Advil Deals at Shoppers Drug Mart!

I went to shoppers yesterday and they had some GREAT deals on Advil! Advil Nighttime is on sale for $3.99 and there are two different coupons you can use with this: 1. the tear pad that has $4 off any advil nighttime product (they are no longer available, but if you saved it this is a great opportunity to use it) or their is a printable coupon found here Advil Nighttime - $2.00 off.  Also their regular Advil is on sale for $2.00 and use this coupon Advil any product - $2.00 off and it's only 99 cents! I think this is an AMAZING deal on Advil.  Just a tip, when you print of the Advil coupons you can only print one per day so print what you want to use!

Always keep your reciepts!

A few years ago, I went Christmas shopping at Old Navy and bought my niece a whole bunch of clothes (at regular price).  When I went to pay for everything, the cashier informed me that that if I keep my receipt and if the anything goes on sale, in the next 30 days, I will receive the difference.  Pretty cool!

So now when ever I purchase an item, I make myself aware of their policy.  So far I have received the price difference from Best Buy, Old Navy, Walmart and Ikea! It's always smart to ask cause you never know!

Be a good couponer!

Companies first created coupons for free samples and cents off a purchase to entice consumers to try their product. Their goal was that the consumer would like it so much that they would continue to purchase the product.  This form of marketing was so successful that is companies still use it today.  However coupons were never created in order for the consumer to make money!

Since the broadcast premier of EXTREME COUPONING on TLC, I have noticed crazy things happening at grocery stores across Toronto. People are getting very greedy and inconsiderate to other consumers that shop at the same stores.  One great example is the printable coupon deal B2 Ziploc products save $4.00 and the recent sale at Walmart on $1.48 boxes. People were buying these and using their coupons and getting cash back!  It has been near impossible to find Ziploc sandwich bags at any Walmart right across the country (I read a lot of other blogs so I have heard).  Yes we all need Ziploc bags but how many are too much?

There is a list of do's and don'ts when it comes to using coupons.  A sort of list from Miss Manners or Miss Savings Girl :)

Do the prep work before you head out shopping
Make your list and organize your coupons, so when you get to the checkout, you are not searching for your coupons and holding up the line. What I have recently done is purchased a photo album with sleeves. I keep it handy in the front of my cart while I shop. When I pick up the item that I want to buy, I quickly find the corresponding coupon and place it in the back of the album. That way when I get to the checkout, I have all my coupons I am using available right away.

Use your coupons correctly
Read your coupon careful, and use it correctly. Pay attention to the terms listed such as "excludes trial sizes" or "one coupon per transaction." One coupon per purchase means that you can use more than one of the same coupons as long as you have one item to match with each coupon (1 coupon for 1 product).  One coupon per transaction means that you can only use one like coupon during that transaction.

Use legitimate coupons
Do not scan or copy coupons. Some coupons can be printed multiple times, but each time you print, there is usually a unique access or security code. You do not get this if you scan or copy the coupons. When it’s time to use your coupons make sure that they are still good and have not expired. I have heard people say that they have given stores expired coupons and have not had any problems. If it is the store’s policy then it is okay to use expired coupons in the store.

How many coupons should I take from a tear pad?
Take what you need. I usually take enough for me based on the For example, if I found a coupon today for razors and the expiry date was December, I would take what I would need for till then and some to share with my friends and family.

Don't be a shelf clearer
Everyone likes a good bargain. There is nothing more frustrating than arriving at a store and seeing a person who emptied the shelves of a "hot" bargain item (i.e. the Walmart/Ziploc incident).  Purchase what you will need. Remember there are so many others out there that would like to get in on the sale!

Make big trips during off hours
If you are going to be making a big shopping trip and plan to use a lot of coupons, try and do it during off hours. Trust me when I say other people get frustrated and so do the cashiers.

Be a coupon fairy
Have you ever been out shopping and seen a coupon for an item you plan on buying just sitting there in front of it like it was meant to be? If you have coupons that are close to their expiration date, be a "coupon fairy" and leave them for someone else to use.  It’s all about karma!

At the end of the day, it’s really up to you and how you want to use coupons, but remember everyone has the right to save, so be courtesy when your out shopping and getting those deals!

Why do people get mad when someone is using coupons?

This is one thing that I do not understand at all. Why do people get angry when other people use coupons at the checkout? Seriously who goes to Walmart on a Saturday mid-day when they are in a rush? and if my choice to use coupons angers you,  I can only assume that you have bigger issues in your life then my choice to save money!

Over the last few months I have becoming much more savvy when using my coupons, I know what is on sale and I know how to maximize my savings with the sales by using the appropriate coupons. So yes, I do use many coupons when I check out, but I am very organized. If I have a printable coupon I take the time to double check with Customer Service that I can use the coupon.   I always tell the cashier that I have coupons, I hand her them right after she rings in the item and I am patient when she takes her time to make sure that it is valid.   I do everything in my power to make checkout time  quick! Over the last two days I have come across some very RUDE people whispering under their breath that "they do not have time for this" or "seriously?"

I am sure that I am not the only person to have encountered impatient people, so I want to share some of the great (well I think great) ways of calling them out on their behaviour.

1. I have turned to one lady and nicely said, "I am sorry money doesn't come easy to me, however if you would like me not to use my coupons and make this process go quickly, I have no problem with you  paying me directly the $20.00 (or whatever my total savings is about to be) I am about to save!" with a great big smile!
2. I turn and acknowledge that they are angry and say "I only wish I could just pay the extra $20.00 (or whatever my total savings is about to be) but I hate to give someone more money then I have to.
3. I turn and say, "I am sorry, do you have an issue with me saving money?"
4. I announce very loud my total savings with a great big smile on my face!
5. I just turn around and smile really big and say "sorry! coupons!"
6. When they say "seriously?" I have said "YUP! COUPONS!"

I think these people are getting mad at the wrong person, I am doing everything correctly, but the cashiers are not properly trained on their store coupon policy and they take a lot of time looking over every single inch of my coupon, and if they are not sure they call over their manager to double check with them.

I really don't care what a stranger thinks or says, I know how to handle my own. I want everyone using coupons to feel the same way, cause at the end of the day it's YOUR money and no one can make you spend more then you need to!

Be a coupon Fairy!

I guess you might be wondering what a coupon "fairy" is.  It's someone that hands out coupons to people.  There are many ways you can be a coupon fairy;

1. Just leave them on grocery store shelves where the coupon corresponds with the product
2. Share with your friends and family, just today I was able to share with my mom and cousin over $20.00 worth of coupons! I went with my mom to do some shopping and I just handed her coupons when she was buying the products that she needed! It was easy and fun helping my mom for a change!
3. Give them to people while at the check out line. A few weeks ago I wrote about the woman that handed me free coupons while in the check out line at RCCC (read post),  I think that is a great idea, I always check out other people carts and see what I can give them so they can save a little.  Who doesn't like free money, and what a wonderful way of doing a random act of kindness!

If you have extra coupons, try being a coupon fairy it's always nice to help others save!

Gas Prices are insane!

I am in shock this morning. I woke up and was watching Breakfast Television and just watched as the gas pump graphic increased its price! CRAZY! over $1.40 a litre. I remember when I thought 40 cents was a high price for gas.

The Globe and Mail wrote a great piece about why the gas prices are rising The Globe and Mail.   I usual get my gas at a Loblaws gas station where it's a bit cheaper and I get cash back to use at one of their stores, I guess my cash back will be getting higher these days! I also check out Gas Buddy. I would never drive too far to get gas, it's just not worth it!

There are also all these crazy tips to save gas, like make sure your tire pressure is at this, maintain your car, a hybrid (seriously)... blah blah blah...
Here are mine:
Walk when you can - seriously do you have to drive to go up the street? Especially when the days are just great, and if it's raining use an umbrella!
Take the transit if it's available.  I live in Toronto and we have the TTC, it's not that bad, and I love reading while on the train or bus, it gives me my mine time!
Car pool when the opportunity comes - you will feel the savings immediately.  Send an email around the office and see if others are interested. Three people in my office have done this and one person shared with me that they have saved over $400.00 in the first month (that includes parking).  Also car pool when you are shopping. You should have to shop alone, find a friend and shop together. You don't want to spend ALL your savings on gas.
Get or use your gas points card Seriously if you are paying an arm and a leg why not get points that you can cash in for gas savings, Petro allows you to buy a GC that knocks of a few cents on each fuel purchase up to a certain amount.

If you have any other use full tips please share on my blog!

The Clearance Rack

I love Shoppers! What Canadian girl doesn’t? I remember when I was younger and working as a waitress in Scarborough. Every week after my Friday night shift, I would stop at the SDM located at Kennedy and Eglinton and buy myself a little treat. There is something inside me that gets giddy when I walk up and down the aisles. I could spend hours just looking, touching and smelling.   I am sure that many of you can understand the soothing, relaxing, meditative affects that a leisurely walk down the drug store aisles has.

One of the best things in SDM is the clearance shelf. It’s usually located at the back of the store (sometimes there are two) that is where you find some great things on sale, and that is a place where you can MAXIMIZE your coupon savings!  Great example of a STEAL this weekend, I went out to my local shoppers yesterday and headed to the clearance rack, and I saw Garnier Ultra Lift anti-wrinkle firming serum for $6.00! This stuff is usually closer to $20.00. I grabbed 2 bottles and my coupon B2G$10 off, and once all was said and down the total cost to me - $1 each!

So the moral of the story is simple, always have your coupons ready and always look at the clearance rack, you never know what you can get for almost FREE! Now if only I could remember to use my optimum card!
